ARE YOU STILL?

Are you still?
On this day unlike any
Are you still?

Are you still?
Although I know there aren't many
Are you still?

Are you still, my little one and only
With a will and a way
Are you still, to have and to hold me
Are you still?

Are you still?
When the battle rages un-won
Are you still?

Are you still?
My darlin' companion
Are you still?

Are you still, I know that you told me
Love of my life
Are you still, to have and to hold me
Are you still?

Are you still, my little one and only
My Pride, my joy
Are you still, just to have and to hold me
Are you still?

NOTES ON SONG WRITING Back to top ^

This song came together rather quickly while I was in the studio working on 'Pass It On'. Jim Brucato arranged the cello part (see chart) for a young music student by the name of Sara Markle from East Aurora NY. August Russo and Jim played percussion, I played guitar and keyboard, and my next door neighbor at my music teaching studio, Becky Potter, did a marvelous job on the flute parts. Dwane Hall at Sessions Recording Studio was the engineer.

The phrase 'Are you still, on this day unlike any…' floated around my head for a long, long time. I had a melody and an uninspired sounding chord progression stalled in its tracks for years. A combination of a fresh approach to voicing a few new guitar chords, the impact of September 11, 2001, and the input of gifted vocalist, Kelleigh Taylor, to the process helped move it along and made for a memorable version of this song. Kelleigh was very helpful in the final stages of writing this, as I tried to do something that at the time was unheard of from me…having a female lead vocal for one of my original tunes. After the success of this effort, I now consider that possibility every time I set out to write a song. "Are You Still' is written in the key of G Major with a capo on the 5th fret ( Key of C Major) to get it in Kelleigh's vocal range. I purposely tried to use open string chord voicing on the guitar and to travel horizontally along the neck to give the song a unique subtle and pretty sound (see lyric/chord chart). I recorded my guitar part on my Hertitage 535 with a combination humbucker and acoustic bridge saddle pickup direct to the board. The inspiration for this song lies in my love for my wife, Diane, and the reassurances we all need in times of doubt, trouble and despair.
