NOTES ON SONG WRITING

Written in A sus2 guitar tuning and capoed on the third fret. This demo version of an instrumental song was recorded at my home studio in two takes; the acoustic guitar part which I had been playing (to myself) for thirty years was done without a click track, while the electric guitar part played on my ES-335 was done spontaneously . It was a fun way to bring this little number to the light of day.

The Chez Henri became the song's title after arriving at the hotel in the French speaking city of Hull near Quebec City, Canada with The Blue Ox Band on tour, in 1974. Noticing the worn neon sign and the faded old world look of that evening's accommodations, I linked the Hotel's name with the song then dominating my musical thoughts. I did try to write lyric to this song without much success. But when the mood strikes me I can whip up a little 'fake french' and adlib my way through it with nonsensical French phrases, only good for a laugh.
