Learning basic guitar skills requires the same general approach for everyone. The beginning guitarist should learn to read and be comfortable with music notation and tablature, the essential “Gang of 15” chords, and the ability to strum them in time. I recommend going through a Method Book One such as: Belwin, Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, Alfred or something similar at lessons. This will give the student a good look at what is the busiest finger
traffic area, and the source of all forms and shapes on the fretboard; the Open
First Position. Guitar technique, types and parts, its role in a song/band, tuning
and good practice habits are reviewed routinely and extensively. I will
supplement this learning period with exercises and simple current songs geared
toward the student’s overall approach. I will also introduce the piano keyboard
as a tuning and visual aid to help students “see” music and to formulate an
understanding and interest in the instrument most often played alongside the guitar.

Beginner guitar is fun, challenging, and rewarding, but expect many moments
when this endeavor seems more like a boot camp for fingers, than a
beautiful moment on MTV. Once you have started learning, playing and
practicing, you should try to embrace a style to call your own. Usually
this is achieved through playing a variety of standard tunes to see how
guitar parts are created and used. Here are some musical styles beginner
and intermediate level students should consider playing:The Beatles,
Blues, Classic Rock, Rock & Roll, Folk, Jazz Standards, Country, Funk,
Kids’ Songs, Alternative, Great American Standards, Folk Rock...
